The Kirtland Formation was deposited Soon once the Fruitland Formation, and contains thick greenish shales and siltstones, with only a few thin coal beds and white sandstone beds. The reduced section of the development is known as the Hunter Wash Member and is also bounded by a white sandstone mattress at its base and a distinctive brown sandstone
